Day six................Tuesday November 14th

We left Norseman about 9am, for another smaller day on the road, after having got the times worked out. My phone had also changed to the correct time by now. We headed towards Kalgoorlie, ........

................. but turned off the main road and detoured via Kambalda.  The area was still full of trees as you can see above.

Many signs along the road pointing to Mines, including Chalice Mine, Cessini  Mine, Mariners Mine site, Mitel mine site, Bald Hill and Paris mine and Jubilee mine. I was curious to what they were mining, so I have been to google today and discovered they were all nickel, gold or tantalum mines. At Kambalda there was lots of accommodation for the workers at these mines.

There had obviously been a fire along this stretch of road.

The temperature climbed up higher than was forecast and it was rather warm by the time we reached Kalgoorlie. It seems like there is one big town, but 2 parts, one called Kalgoorlie and one was Boulder.

We booked into a caravan park for 2 nights, unhooked the car and settled in, before heading off to the Super pit lookout..........................

This is a photo of the picture in the display shed at the lookout, that was obviously taken from above........................

..............and this is the one I took at the lookout. It is really hard to appreciate the scale of this pit, but it is massive!!

I zoomed in to get this truck, which looks like an ant from our viewing place. Those trucks are huge.

This is the bucket of an excavator, which helps give you some perspective! And to see me wearing a hat as below also tells you that it was very HOT by now.

Talked Barry into a photo here, and when I commented to a friend to take note of his safety boots!! She came straight back with a comment about his short legs instead!!

A bit of information for you..................

Driving through the streets of town I noted that they had mostly kept the old character to the buildings. I did snap one below, and hope to get back for more pics before we leave. I was happy that the old buildings have not been torn down and replaced with modern characterless shops.

After our visit to the super pit we returned to the van and turned on the aircon and read emails and did more blogging. There was a storm warning issued for the area so we expected a wild night, but thankfully the warning was cancelled later in the evening.

Day six resulted in far fewer kilometres travelled with some sight seeing thrown in.

Be back soon, I am finally catching up with posts.

Blessings, From Jude

Those trucks are just mere specs of dirt. 😂Barry’s legs

We have several open pit mines like that in our area. It is amazing how big those trucks are once you get close to them.

We lived in Kambalda for nearly 30years and hubby worked underground.
Hubby was born in the goldfields and lived in Boulder growing up.
I often still pinch myself that we now live so close to the beach and not in the red dust…
Enjoy your stay.

That Super Pit is mind blowing. The photo of Barry is too funny. Kalgoorlie is such an interesting place to visit. Back in 1984, before he met me, Mick worked at a mine 300km north of Kalgoorlie. They mined nickel and zinc. He worked first as an above ground fitter, then as an underground fitter. Enjoy continuing to play the tourist.
